About This Speaker Tape

Founders Day - 2006

Sandy B. traces the trajectory of a life lived in the shadow of a 'scary Higher Power' and a deep-seated feeling of not belonging. From a childhood in New Haven to a career as a naval aviator he describes the seductive power of alcohol to temporarily 'fix' his internal void. He maps out the wreckage of his later career—shaking in the cockpit of a million-dollar plane a diagnosis of a 'childhood fear of flying' that ended his wings and a descent into a mental ward straitjacket. He dismantles the lie that material success equals happiness arguing that the 12 Steps are not a set of instructions to be read but a process of sculpture where a Higher Power chips away the defects to reveal the person underneath. He concludes with the realization that his own professional failure was a hidden mercy that saved him from a fatal plane crash.
