A short fragmented memory of the early days of the program Joe M. looks back at a circle of old friends—George N. Charlie and Gary—and the realization that time has a bit of a bite to it.
He recalls a bit of banter between the old-timers old friends who have been sober since 1962 and the same kind of gallows humor that keeps a few old men in a room together for decades.

Thank you. My name is Joe, and I'm a real alphabetic. Through God's grace, my college program works one day at a time in my life. I haven't found it necessary to take a drink since the 10th of March, 1962. For this, I'm extremely grateful. I'll be careful tonight. This is like old coming home week. All my early friends in the program are here, and George, and Nelson, and Charlie, and Gary, and Dave. Remember to go back 20 years ago when we were all coming together and all this was a beginning. George George was saying, someone told him, and it was all being over there. He said, Charlie's getting old, and Joe's getting older. You ought to go. You might not see them no more. And Charlie, and George said, he got home and figured out, hell, he was talking about me. He wasn't talking about them. Heard a guy tell one the other day, he said, this guy went to the fortune teller. I got some good news and some bad news.
