From a nervous childhood in New England to the cockpit of a Marine Corps jet, Sandy B. spent his life as a "moving target." He describes the 'macho' facade of the aviator masking a primary alcoholic who used drinking to silence a persistent inner voice and avoid the pain of thinking. After losing his wings and spending six months in a naval nut ward Sandy B. was forcibly steered into sobriety by a sponsor Bill T. who treated him with a 'get in the car' brand of urgency. He dismantles the illusion of the 'quiet drunk,' admitting he was a human tornado who pushed people's hot buttons and left wreckage in his wake. Through the Eighth Step he moves from a 'Johnny One Note' existenceβwhere the only note he played was 'Me'βtoward a life of harmony and forgiveness eventually finding a deep late-stage love with his wife Tina.
