Allen B. and Herb K. - Exploring Emotional Sobriety - Workshop - 2025

Three graduate degrees in philosophy psychology and theology didn't stop the wreckage. Herb K. describes the intellectual armor armor that failed to solve the same behavioral patterns. He pivots from the same old information to a 'cold faith' decision in Step Two where the Higher Power is a 'mystery' and faith is thin and dark. He breaks down the biological imperatives of recovery insisting that sleep deprivation is a catalyst for rage anxiety and 'selfish sexuality,' arguing that 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep is non-negotiable for emotional stability. He closes with the practicalities of an 80-year-old in recovery navigating trust and boundaries with his daughters while remaining conscious of his own vulnerability.

A whole bunch. You have a graduate education in philosophy, in psychology and in theology, three different graduate programs you have. A whole bunch. You have a graduate education in philosophy, in psychology and in theology, three different graduate programs you have. And now you're in a four or five years, you have a lot of information, but you haven't changed. you haven't changed at the radical personal behavioral level there was life-changing image that he gave me and he quoted einstein the consciousness that created the problem cannot be the consciousnessthat solves the problem and he asked me to have an attitude of openness in my mind and openness in my heart and be willing to be changed, be willing to be taken to a place that you don't even know exists. I created a set-aside prayer for myself that has changed over time. My current version is, Holy Spirit, release me from up till now and detach me from after now and allow me to be fully present in the now. a power other than ourself that i give different names to alan mentioned that my favorite term is mystery i don't know what it is but i believe and act as if it is still today i don' t have any certitude and i have no special feeling about it but I made that decision a cold faith decision in step two very thin very dark very empty very insubstantial God is whatever that is reality is power is and in step three I made a decision to be in alignment with that to the best of my ability to perceive it. And my life's journey is to stay conscious and to become more conscious so that I'm perceiving more accurately, more effectively over time. So Maslow, and you heard Dr. Berger refer to it as a diagram and a model for the hierarchy of human needs. And I've adopted it, dropped his name from it because I've used my terms for it but it gives me an approach to human development and organic process obviously biology is really important question for you and it's the question I've been using to challenge people for at least 10 maybe 20 years and it'S especially true today with the pandemic and the technology that we have and the isolation that we're submitted to, are you getting enough sleep? What's enough herb? Seven and a half to nine hours consistent daily. It is not negotiable. Now it may be that you're an exception, probably not but it may that you are an exception. I have no opinion about that but the general population needs seven and a half to 9 hours of sleep a night consistently. And if you don't get that, you will be compensating with unhealthy behavior. Resentment that turns into rage, fear that turns into anxiety and phobias, shame that turns into some form of selfish sexuality or other unhealthy behavior, this is how we operate as human beings if you don't get seven and a half to nine hours of sleep and you think that it might be worth experimenting with try it for five days in a row literally make a commitment do whatever you need to do to get five days in a row and see how you feel on the other side of it of course then there's the emotional awareness and all that comes with that and the social relationships we're particularly challenged today we need to be creative about it stay within the guidelines of course but be but challenge it and be creative about it i meet with my daughters probably once every two or three weeks independently or together because i trust their judgment i don't meet with people that i can't trust their judgment of i'm 80 years old i'm very healthy but i'm a target demographic it's about using common sense and then alan talked generously about some of the terms of Accelerated.
