Famous is ok with me
You can’t please everyone or comport with every understanding of the program. Good thing God is in charge and can use the work you do to His/Her/It’s purposes.
Thank you. The efforts you have made have had a big impact on my program.
With gratitude,
Tony, I understand your sentiment…
There is a reason I created this specific page – the words “Famous AA Speakers” is one of the more popular keywords that people search for in this arena, so i had to build the page to attract those visitors googling for that term.
The page ranks #1 in google for that term and was responsible for drawing 4,687 visits to the site in 2016. Several pages are purpose-built for the same reason.
Apologies to those offended, i’m just trying to get people listening to tapes every reasonable way I can.
Seems to me that this could be solved by taking away the “famous” in the category.
“Famous” aa speakers seems to be an oxymoron. Celebrities and famous people are no more alcoholics than I am. I believe that Tony has a point. Take the “famous” out. We are to be humble, not self-aggrandising. Thank you and God bless
In some professions it’s almost impossible to keep your anonymity. Most of the folks here will be recognized by members of the general public whether they say their name or not. Early AA didn’t have to deal with the global changes in communications and the Internet, so if you were famous and sober, perhaps a few people knew about it in a smaller circle.. Nowadays, if your well known or famous, everyone will know about your history and recovery. It’s a much cleverer idea to be open about your recovery when your in the public eye than try to hide it from the world. Hiding will bring even closer scrutiny from press and the Net. Maintaining anonymity whilst publicly breaking it may seem paradoxical, but, it’s a perfect strategy for dealing with the compromises that fame brings.
comment removed – impertinent/unproductive.
I definitely wont have time to listen to every tape to see if they say their full name or not, but i think just to “play it safe” since it is a serious bone of contention for some, I’m just gonna anonymize the names. Truthfully, I’m a bit uncomfortable having full names listed here.
I support whatever you decide. Thank you for doing this wonderful service.
While Understanding Anonymity makes some good points, Admin, if you are listing the speakers as they have identified themselves, I do not think the onus is on you to change anything. If UA has a problem with speakers breaking their anonymity then his issue is with them and it is up to him to address it with them directly (when possible, obviously, since many of them have passed on).
