Nice share. I’m slowly going through and anonymizing the titles.
It amazes me how little people understand about anonymity. Please open up the book, “AA Comes of Age” – turn to the appendix in the back titled “Why Alcoholics Anonymous is Anonymous” written by our co-founder. It is very clear. If I want to tell my employer, my friends, my family, my graduate school classmates that I am in AA – that is up to me. HOWEVER… If I want to break my anonymity at the PUBLIC level (I.e. press, radio, films, internet, recordings, books, etc) — out tradition says anonymity 100% regardless of whether I want to or not. Stating that anonymity principles are about not breaking other people’s anonymity is only a fraction of what Traditions 11 and 12 are about… In fact, they are actually MORe about not breaking your OWN anonymity at the PUBLIC level. There are so many reasons for this.. All of which can be found in that appendix of the book AA Comes of Age, in “Tradition 11” and “Tradition 12” in the book Language of the Heart (collection of our co-founder’s grapevine writings), the second legacy section of the book AA Comes of Age, the pamphlet “Understanding Anonymity,” and traditions 11 and 12 in the 12 and 12. After reading all of those items carefully, with an open mind… Then you will truly understand where the principle of anonymity comes in. Don’t just repeat what your sponsor tells you.. Sometimes sponsors are wrong. Sometimes mine has been wrong. Go do the research for yourself and see how it changes your perception about some of these things. Our co-founder from New York who wrote much of our literature.. When he was on his death bed.. He said there is no other principle in AA that is more important than anonymity.. And that there is no principle in AA which requires more STUDY and attention. So to think that the principles of anonymity can be summarized in a few sentences in a comment post on here is not wise. There is so much within this topic. I challenge you.. Before you reads these words and bristle with antagonism.. I want you to know that I too did not like when someone first mentioned these ideas.. I too thought they were some kind of fundamentalist.. But I took the time.. I did the research… And I had a change of heart. That’s all I got. Thanks.
My sense is I’m gonna have to go through each tape and change all the titles. It’ll be done when it gets done – gonna take a bit of time for 150+ tapes 🙂
To be honest, I don’t know what to make of this issue, it can be back or white in either direction i suppose. I’m gonna leave it as it is for now.
The don’t give their last names. This is the same as attending an open speaker meeting, only online. Anyone with a desire to stop drinking is welcome. Being anonymous and staying silent aren’t the same thing.
Anonymity belongs to the individual; it is his to do with as he wishes. The tradition of anonymity is that we protect others’ anonymity. You will see other speakers on here with first name and last initial. They are practicing their anonymity as they see fit. Likewise, if famous people want to break anonymity, that is their option. We must be careful not to take others’ inventories on how they work their programs.

Can these questions be answered by the website’s administrators? The website is public. Being recorded at an AA conference or recovery radio interview doesn’t imply permission to break anonymity
I don’t think the anonymity is to be taken to the extreme. I don’t think anyone would even care, but are more enlighten to hear from these famous people and there views. If these famous people didn’t want their anonymity compromised then they wouldn’t have allowed their talks to be recorded. I’m pretty sure they knew they were being recorded at the time.
Yes, I enjoy hearing these stories, but I have concerns about our traditions…. Have these speakers allowed their anonymity to be broken? If so, then they are not as great an example of 12 Step recovery as I would like to believe. If not, do they know they are on here? Does this site honor them and their recovery? Sigh….
I guess it is up to them if they want to break their anonymity. Is it using celebrity status to try to help others?
tradition 11 is there for a reason
it is not up to them, if they want to break thier anonymity ! it is very important to remember this type of not following traditions could destroy aa as whole if it is kept up .
