Thank You!!
Thank You!!
Thanks for that phelan – I feel the same frequently – stories, check-ins, but little mention of how someone is working the steps NOW and learning how to surrender even MORE of thier *stuff* to their HP and gaining more levels of freedom.
That said, I need to be doing more of the suggested actions myself 🙂
I have found it hard to work with newcomers cause they are living off the fellowship. People with years of not drinking become the old timers BUT speak of Great theory without sharing AA steps. I often feel like the only one sitting there wondering “what the heck is this?” Sober since 7/17/87 and my old timers have passed on to the BIG Meeting! So I go to an AA detox center mostly now to work with newcomers to keep it real for me. I Loved Chris sharing the truth.
Chris R can sound pretty confrontational, i get it that he can sound arrogant. I’ve forgotten the what the first 5 minutes of this tape deal with, but i tend to be partial to one of his strongest opinions – that the program is in the book, many meetings don’t talk about the book or the steps, and there are a lot of people dying out there.
I agree 100% with you based on my experience. Chris R is passionate that no other newcomer or dry drunk be killed due to watered down AA that bypasses the entire intent of AA: to have a vital spiritual experience in order to stay sober forever & be able to help others get that too. Middle of the road AA literally lead me to a noose, because it had no original substance (didn’t address spiritual malady). My suicide attempt went cold. 4 days later I found a Primary Purpose group & a Chris R CD! Thank God he’s ‘opinionated’: he HAS to be in order to shout above the ineffective fuss of most AA that’s become spineless in modern times.
I wish we had a Primary Purpose or Fellowship of the Spirit Group in my area. AA works for a lot of people here, but I’ve had to go well outside of AA to develop a relationship with a HP and relate to/converse with people who are on a spiritual path, developing god-consciousness, etc.
Suffice it to say I needed more than what I was finding in the rooms here. That said, AA is still essential for me – I need to chat with others in program be reminded regularly, especially regarding Step 1.
Here’s another way of viewing it- it’s not arrogance, it’s passionate truth to help the real alcoholic. He probably has seen a lot of alcoholics die from hearing the wrong message.
After 5 minutes of wasting my time listening to this person,Yes we are supposed to try to be non-Judgemental and be loving and opened minded. However this dude needs to throw in the towel and break out his banjo and strum dueling banjos. He needs to look up the word humility..His arrogance and attitude coming across like he knows everything is pathetic.Warning! do yourself a favor and do not waste your time and life listening to this person.LISTEN TO PETER YARROW IN 15 MINUTES IN HIS DOWN TO EARTH QUALIFICATION HIS MESSAGE IS TIMELESS !
quit whining, you probably heard something you dont like
Timeless? If that’s a newage synonym for watered down then I agree. He should also try reading the traditions.
He has read the traditions. He mentions tradition 5 a lot. Chris R’s messages SAVED my life because he sticks to the ORIGINAL intent of the Program & what actually worked as written in the big book. The watered down AA almost killed me, much like he experienced.
I agree Chris r message got me back from an emotional rock bottom. I realized the reason why and was able to get back on track and do the program the big book way. Not the treatment centre way.
Some of us alcoholics need this kind of speaker. He is honest and directly speaking to ability to be super oversensitive! I don’t want to die and people like this are saving lives. The BB tells us that when we are pointing fingers at others the problem probably lies somewhere inside of ourselves.
You don’t understand what he saying.
It’s been lifted the desire to use but my mental obsession has came back why is that after almost 3 years?
Mary are you living in steps 10, 11 and 12 every day? Do what pages 84-88 say every day and see if that helps. Good luck.
I have a question the desire has left my first yr. the thing is I have had a desire to use is it because I haven’t did my first 12 steps correctly?
I would certainly look at that. Did you do the Steps with a sponsor who had had a Spiritual Experience as a result of doing the Steps? I sometimes wonder if that lifting of desire to use, or compulsion to drink is a moment of grace, or clarity. But to maintain that grace, we do have to do certain things. Pray and Meditate, work with others, stay in service, whatever that may be; opening the doors, making coffee, becoming a GSR or treasurer.
When the compulsion was lifted from me I felt like a little child, cowering, looking above me. Wondering what was gone. I knew something was different, and I knew it was good and I knew I would do ANYTHING to keep that new freedom I felt. Fortunately for me, I had found a tape and the lady on it said something I will always remember. She said, if you are new to AA and if you think you are different, I’ll tell you how to be different, do what you are told, that would be different. So,I found a sponsor and did the Steps quickly as it says to in the book. As soon as I had my list of people I had to make amends to from Steps 4 and 5 I started making amends. I put my sobriety, my spiritual life first, before all things because I have nothing to offer in the rest of my life if I don’t keep in fit spiritual condition. I pray for you that you will find what I have found. Chris R is part of my learning. He pointed out things in the Big Book that I had read but not heard. I live in a rather isolated area, and these tapes are a Godsend. I hope you can find the spiritual guidance I have found by listening to them.
One more thing: I started out with the Joe and Charlie tapes, they are a great place to begin a deeper study of the program of AA.
