Not a pioneer. Sober in 1950? Maybe not even that. Insane.
This is a frighteningly narcissistic share. I cannot believe this is typical of California AA in late 1950s/early 1960s. But it may enlighten some re: the grandiose psychopath ‘hostage-taker’ type heard in the rooms. *Sound recording is poor, but psychology students will be rewarded w/ a classic 1950s American male NPD/Cluster B example.*
I beg to differ with your assessment. In my opinion, he’s very powerful speaker that has an honest and meaningful account of the depths of despair of alcoholism. This is the kind of informative, honest sharing that I was blessed to hear when I came into the rooms in 1979, in the days before we were inundated with a bunch of meaningless speakers talking about their coffee commitments
Thanks for the comment Richard. I added a tag to the tape. And in response to your comment about people talking about coffee commitments at meetings – that’s why I began building this website. I was so tired of listening to meeting speakers that never referenced the Big Book or talked about their relationship with their Higher Power amongst other Big Book-based recovery topics.
The Tag “AA Pioneers 1930s 1940s” is WRONG.
Speaker sounds like a classic narcissistic liar. AA doesn’t need to give them any gold stars, either!
At what point (min:sec) does he name his sponsor – if you actually listened to this dreck.
This certainly isnt a Big Book speaker either.
“a classic narcissistic liar”? He talked about having wine in his icebox while his children had no milk and went hungry in America. I agree with Richard. I love these old timers and could listen to them all day. Thanks for uploading this!
