Fair recording of c.1987 talk: “AA was started in Akron 52 years ago by two men” (38:20 mark)
Casimir Lipinski: born 1914, drinking at 16 (1930) married at 17 (1931) to Helen Patrick, father of Casmira & Dori. **there are inconsistencies w/ biographical data: DoB 1914 or 1918?**
Sober in January 1942? No mention of WW2, rationing, etc.
Cass died in 2005? If so, he was then 63 years sober and (after Akron AA John Reese’s death in 1989) perhaps the ‘Longest Sober AA’ for maybe a decade. **Liz B. is currently the ‘Longest Sober AA’ w/ 67+ Years.**
15:40 bootleggers (c.1931)
16:35 he hit streetcar, reported in Cleveland Plain Dealer
21:55 wife pregant w/ 2nd child, when he was a union meatcutter
29:00 met Frank 35yo barber had been sober 5mo.
30:20 went back to Frank on Christmas Day; Frank said come back w/ $15. (Detox Cost in 1942.)
32:20 AAs came and visited, told stories & how they changed, emphasized God; hospital stay 5 days.
33:20 went to first meeting, continuously sober ever since
33:30 First Meetg: go to meetgs, make hospital calls
34:15 new employer gave him 1.5 hr lunch to make hospital visits; took all suggestions
Whole Message: ‘Talk to Somebody, Help Somebody.’
37:45 very brief mention of “literature”
Mediocre talk; preaching/screaming old guy. The audience is tellingly silent. (Memo to Future Self, Age 73: Don’t Be That Guy.)
Absent is any mention of formally working the Steps. Nothing on Dr. Bob or Clarence Snyder. Disappointingly, there’s also no information on Cleveland AA in the critical period of 1942-4.
I remember giving my first lead at Broadway – Harvard Friday night. My home group at the time and Cas give me a comment. Man that was cool He just celebrated 50 years. And seeing these two every Thursday morning was monumental to me early. Sobriety. These men and so many more. Helped me, encouraged me, gave me a job, a place to live and something to do in the meetings. His sponsor had five months. My first did not have quiet a year. I grew up in A. A..learned how to stand on my own two feet
